Christa Coetzee

Visual Artist

Christa is an accomplished visual artist with over thirty-five years of creative experience. Her work is characterised by a deliberate boldness and a gentle tone that conveys drama, vibrancy, and contrast, often evoking bitter-sweet and colourful quirky emotions. Gilding is a distinctive element in her art, enhancing mood and adding richness to various mediums such as acrylics, charcoal, and handmade ink pens.

Christa’s creative journey began with complementary endeavours, including co-owning an art gallery and managing a corporate promotional business specializing in stationery design and gilding corporate awards. She has spent the last seventeen years contributing to the artist community in Australia, residing in Darwin, Gladstone, and presently Brisbane.

In 2015, Christa established her studio and private gallery in Clear   Mountain, actively engaging with the local community through events like the Creative Samford Art Trails, where she has participated for ten consecutive years. She is a proud member of Dayboro Art Gallery, Flying Arts, and MoretonBay tourist attractions.

Christa’s notable exhibitions include a collaborative piece at the Judith Wright Contemporary Arts Gallery in 2014, a solo exhibition titled ‘Driftwood Depictions’ in 2013, and participation in the 1770Arts Festival. For five consecutive years, she was a finalist in the Rio Tinto Martin Hanson Memorial Art Awards in Gladstone. In 2015, she was selected as a finalist for the St. Andrews Memorial ANZAC Award.

She continued to showcase her work in various group exhibitions, including those held by the Chapel Gallery in Samford and Albany Creek. In April 2017 and 2022, she served as a judge for the SAS Easter Art Awards. In July 2018, she was a finalist in the Moreton Bay Art Awards and participated in a two-day masterclass led by Noel Thurgate of the National Art School. The same year, she had solo exhibitions in the Hub Gallery and the Stage Door Theatre Gallery.

From 2018 to 2020, Christa displayed her work in selected galleries and opened an artist retreat, providing workshops for artists in residence. Since 2020, she has been invited to facilitate corporate team-building events and regularly contributes to creative activities at a local wellness retreat.

In 2023, Christa was honoured with the First Prize in the SAS Easter Art Show 2D category and was a finalist in the Rio Tinto Martin Hanson Memorial Art Awards. She participated in the Queensland Regional Arts Award, Brisbane Portrait Prize – Salon des Refuses, and is currently featured in theB.A.S (Backyard Art Stories) magazine.

Beyond her involvement in the art community, Christa deftly manages her schedule by crafting commissioned pieces and producing new works for local galleries, shops, and international clients. She ardently strives to enhance her current techniques, embracing her inquisitive nature to explore and evolve as an artist.
