I have a nephew who is a 14 year old artist that would like to offer art therapy to children and is interested in the Art Therapy certification. Is there an age requirement for obtaining this certification?

In U.S. MH providers are required to adults. Check with your state licensing board for specific U.S. information. Other countries may or may not have similar requirements. In some states, a MH practitioners may have pd or volunteer Peer Providers. A “peer” is defined a person from the same or quite similar background as those receiving therapy, i.e. Veteran serving vets, persons with Substance Use background serving those with active SA issues. I have supervised many Peer Provider, but they were all adults. If a workshop were held or group therapy were provided, Peer Providers may assist. Again, your best bet is contacting your licensing bureau.

    Hi Lisa,

This is Michelle from team Scholistico.

Thank you for your question! There are no formal prerequisites or age requirements to enroll in our Art Therapy Practitioner Course. However, some techniques covered in the course may require adult supervision or assistance, especially when working with younger participants. We’re excited to support your nephew on this inspiring journey!

my daughter is twelve and loves art , as well as her 6 year old sister who has autism . We seen there was no age requirement to take the course so she is taking it to be able to help engage more with her sister. We are homeschoolers so this is perfect for our family as a whole. I would like to look into the licensing though for her too as If she is able to start a career out of this in a several years she is 18 Id love to help her with that . Who would I contact in Florida about this ? Labor board?

      Hi Sonni,

Thank you so much for sharing, what a beautiful intention your daughter has, and how wonderful that your family is exploring this journey together! 💛 It’s incredibly inspiring to hear how she wants to use art to connect more deeply with her sister. Homeschooling families often find this course to be a great fit, and we’re honored to be part of your experience.

You’re absolutely right, while there are no age requirements for enrolling in our Art Therapy Practitioner Certification Course, becoming a licensed clinical art therapist later on does involve specific steps, especially in the U.S.

To explore the requirements specific to Florida, you may wish to contact:

🔹 Florida Department of Health – Division of Medical Quality Assurance
🔹 Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage & Family Therapy, and Mental Health Counseling
🔹 And yes, you may also contact the Florida Department of Labor or Education for broader guidance on youth career pathways and early preparation.

That said, our holistic course is a wonderful foundation for young people to explore healing through creativity in non-clinical, community-based, or personal development settings, especially when supported by a parent like you. 🌿
