Managing digital clutter across multiple devices

Lately I’ve been thinking about how messy things get when you use several phones, laptops, and tablets and each one ends up with its own set of apps installed. I noticed I had three versions of the same note-taking tool on different devices, each with different content, which turned syncing into a small nightmare. It made me wonder how others keep their digital space tidy without spending hours uninstalling and reorganizing everything every month.

Im glad I have everything from Apple under same Apple account and put it in my cloud in a dedicated map, so its the same on all devices. But sometimes I have to store things on the device itself, because my internet is not reliable and thats what you need for proper cloudstorage and only put it in the cloud when I am finished. Now one of my computers crashed and it seems that my whole start up disk is destroyed and I lost all the files that I stored on it including many photos and downloaded files I was just finishing off lots of essays for my study so I had days delay as I had to do most over again. Its never good to not use a cloudservice for the most important stuff. If you store everything on your devices under the same account and have a sync service, it shouldnt be a problem at all. But often you have to pay extra for sync service if the app is usable offline. If not having Apple, Microsoft Office has the same strategy and cloud service, my school offers it and stores everything automatically on their Office cloudserver as well but I didnt have the software on my crashed computer so it didnt save me.

    Hi Barry and Anne Marieke,

Thank you both for sharing your experiences here, and I hope you’re doing well today.😊

Barry, you brought up such an important point. Digital clutter can easily sneak up on us, especially when we switch between several devices throughout the day. Different apps, different versions, and different files, it really does become a small maze to navigate.

Anne Marieke, I’m so sorry to hear about your computer crash and the files you lost. That must have been incredibly frustrating, especially while working on your essays. Thank you for opening up about your experience; it’s a powerful reminder of how crucial backups and syncing can be.

What you both mentioned highlights a common struggle many of us face. A few ideas that might help:

    • Using one main cloud service (iCloud, OneDrive, Google Drive) can help keep everything consistent across devices.
    • Choosing apps with strong syncing features reduces the chance of having different versions or missing files.
    • A quick monthly cleanup, just a few minutes can prevent things from piling up.
    • For anyone with spotty internet, offline-friendly apps that sync later can be a lifesaver.
    • And most importantly, keeping automatic backups on for the essentials can help avoid painful losses.

Thank you again for bringing this topic forward. 💗
